SAFElink Community Open Day
22 April 2010
SAFElink Official Opening
The $824 million Australian Government funded Ipswich Motorway Upgrade: Wacol to Darra project was official unveiled to the community at an open day on Sunday 18th April. This event gave the local community the chance to see the newly constructed free-flowing multi-level interchange up close from the Ipswich Road Service Road (which was closed for the event).
Celebrations included an official ribbon cutting, street displays, a viewing platform for a bird's eye view of the project, food and drink stalls and family entertainment.
The SAFElink Alliance is BMD Construction's largest project to date. In a 50:50 joint venture with Leighton Contractors, BMD Constructions has successfully completed the SAFElink Alliance ahead of schedule, including:
- Widening 5km of the Ipswich Motorway from four to six lanes (with provision for eight lanes);
- Widening 3km of the Centenary Highway from four to six lanes;
- A major upgrade of the Centenary Highway Interchange, involving the construction of a free
- flow multi level interchange; and
- Design and construction of the bridge and rail embankment for the Darra to Springfield Rail
- Alliance that passes through the interchange.
The works were managed while the existing Ipswich Motorway and Centenary highway remained open to over 80,000 vehicles per day.
