BMD Constructions build on bridge portfolio in Western Australia

BMD Constructions are successfully building upon our bridge construction capability in Western Australia, with the award of two bridge projects for Main Roads Western Australia including bridges at Kumarina and Munarra on the Great Northern Highway in the Shire of Meekatharra and the Treendale Bridge project in the state’s south west.

The Kumarina and Munarra project will provide necessary flood mitigation infrastructure along the Great Northern Highway, the longest highway in Australia connecting Perth with its northernmost port, Wyndham.

The two site locations are approximately 146 kilometres apart, with the Kumarina floodways component involving the construction of two precast, prestressed Main Roads Western Australia standard plank bridges and the realignment of the Great Northern Highway, as well as the construction of a floodway in Munarra.

The project commenced in September and upon completion will reduce future disruptions including road closures and flooding, as well as boost road user safety and accessibility, along this vital highway.

Heading further south, the Treendale Bridge project will provide a much needed connection between the residential areas of Eaton in the shire of Dardanup and Treendale in the shire of Harvey. The bridge’s surrounding suburbs are some of the fastest growing areas in Western Australia and connecting the two areas is critical to the road network and interconnectivity of the neighbouring shires.

As well as providing a key social connection, the bridge will offer essential access for emergency service vehicles and connect the commercial precincts of the two residential subdivisions.

The bridge will be a launched steel composite box girder steel structure approximately 224 metres in length and 14.3 metres wide with spill through abutments. The bridge deck will include two 3.5 metre wide lanes with 1.2 metre wide shoulders and one 3 metre wide dual use path. Works will also include construction of a ‘possum bridge’ on the right and left hand side of the main Collie River channel to facilitate the movement of possums along the watercourse.

Upon completion of these projects, BMD Constructions will have successfully delivered eight bridge projects for Main Roads Western Australia, and with the recent completion of the East Coolup Bridge over the Murray River and the Fortescue River Bridge in Newman, BMD continues to succeed in delivering vital infrastructure that increases productivity and reliability by easing traffic congestion in these local communities.
