Boosting Indigenous employment in the Top End

In the Northern Territory (NT), BMD Constructions and BMD Urban have been praised for our commitment to Indigenous engagement.

BMD have been local in the NT for over 18 years and are dedicated to supporting the community and providing equal opportunities for Indigenous Australians through engagement initiatives and highly successful employment and training programs.

Trainees from the Department of Infrastructure were seconded to the Muirhead, Tiger Brennan Drive and Gateway Shopping Centre projects, where they undertook contract administration, Occupational Health and Safety and site inspection works. The program was highly successful and the trainees involved were appreciative of the opportunities and experiences they were exposed to.

The appointment to our first Managing Contractor role for the Tiger Brennan Drive upgrade in Darwin has demonstrated the strength of our business systems and capabilities. BMD’s close collaboration with the client and local contractors was a strong focus and as the project nears completion, BMD has expanded Darwin’s skill base with an extremely high 87 per cent of work delivered by local Territory companies.

Employment opportunities for Indigenous Territorians was high with 64,769 hours of the total 357,585 completed hours completed by the project’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce. The project is also fostering the career development of young Indigenous Territorians in the construction sector with seven Indigenous trainees employed onsite.

Further, BMD’s four year partnership with the Clontarf Foundation saw the establishment of a site visit program, which enables young Indigenous men from the program to learn about construction environments and career opportunities.

BMD’s extensive experience working in regional and remote areas and within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a testament to our commitment to supporting the local communities in which we operate.
