First launch of the East Coolup Bridge in Western Australia

A major project milestone was reached on the East Coolup Bridge replacement project in WA yesterday, with the first section of the new bridge over the Murray River launched.

This significant event completes the first 50 metre span of the super-structure and allows the remaining steel box girder to be fabricated in the bed before the final launch in May.

The $6.9 million contract for Main Roads Western Australia involves demolishing the 1964 timber bridge that had a 10-tonne load limit, and the construction of a new steel and concrete bridge.

The upgrade of this key transport link from the South Western Highway to Pinjarra Williams Road, will improve driving conditions, boost road user safety and allow use by heavier vehicles in this growing community.

BMD Construction’s WA Construction Manager, Mick Slocombe said, “The project is significant as it the first time in WA that a steel girder/concrete composite structure has been incrementally launched.

“The collaborative team approach and strong relationship with the client ensured that the first concrete deck pour and scaffolding access platforms were delivered seamlessly,” he said.

Due to the age and condition of the run down structure, the project is being fast tracked and this milestone will guarantee a safe driving environment when the bridge opens in October 2016.
