Award Winning Legacy Way Project on Schedule for 2015 Completion

Transcity, a Joint Venture between BMD Constructions, Italian company Ghella and Spanish company Acciona was acknowledged on an international scale as the winner of the ‘2013 Major Tunnelling Project of the Year’ award in the $500 million and over category at the International Tunnelling Awards in London. This award cements Brisbane City Council’s Legacy Way project as one of the most innovative and successful tunnelling projects from around the world.

Transcity was awarded the contract to design, construct, operate and maintain the 4.6 kilometre tunnel for a period of ten years. Legacy Way is a twin-bore toll road tunnel connecting Brisbane’s Western Freeway with the Inner City Bypass (ICB).

Legacy Way will feature a state-of-the-art ventilation and air quality monitoring system, which will ensure air quality levels are maintained, both inside and outside the tunnel. This system will include two ventilation outlets, located within the Victoria Park Golf Course at Kelvin Grove and within the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha.

In early 2014, work continued on the interchange upgrade to install concrete barriers, drainage, road pavements and lighting on the outbound and inbound lanes of the Western Freeway. Work was also completed to modify the intersection at Burbong Street and Moggill Road by installing new traffic signals, line markings and a new pedestrian signalised crossing. The upgrade will cater for changed traffic patterns at the Moggill Road and Western Freeway Interchange.

BMD has provided their support to the local community through a range of programs and events including the Toowong Cemetery’s 140th Anniversary celebrations, rebuilding Milton State School’s flood damaged BBQ area and sponsoring Bicycle Queensland’s Bike Week.

As part of the project, Transcity is also facilitating the design and construction of the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Landscape Plan which is due to commence construction in mid-2014. Improvements will include creation of a lagoon, boardwalks, picnic areas and facilities, art and play trail, kitchen garden and desalination ponds. The tunnel ventilation station will be embedded in the ground and feature a green roof to minimise visual impact. The ventilation outlet will incorporate a hilltop lookout and likewise be integrated into the garden’s design.

The project is on schedule for 2015 completion and the successful delivery can be attributed to BMD’s ability to deliver innovative design and construction solutions for both surface and underground activities.
