BMD Awarded the Roads and Services Contract at Port of Melbourne

BMD Constructions was recently awarded the Roads and Services contract as part of the Port of Melbourne Corporation’s $1.6 billion Port Capacity Project at Webb Dock.

The contract will deliver important ‘backbone’ infrastructure including roads, utilities and buffer zones. This infrastructure will enable the Port’s new terminal operators to fast track the development of their facilities which includes a new international container terminal, an expanded auto terminal and a dedicated ‘on-port’ pre-delivery inspection hub.

BMD Constructions’ key works include the construction of new road connections linking Webb Dock to Melbourne’s arterial road network, in particular the Westgate Bridge. Construction of the new roads will direct traffic away from residential streets, reducing congestion and the upgrade of the existing roundabouts on Todd Road will better meet traffic demands.

The project also invests heavily in the provision of buffer zones to protect and enhance the amenity of nearby residents and local communities. These buffer works will be delivered by BMD’s wholly owned subsidiary and landscape construction company, JMac Constructions.

The Port of Melbourne is a vital link in a complex supply chain that creates jobs and drives Victoria’s economic growth. The redevelopment of Webb Dock will see it returned to its original role as an international container handling facility that is capable of handling at least one million containers annually.

This project is critically important to the State of Victoria and as such, the Government has declared the development as a project of state significance. Winning the bid for the Roads and Services works is a major achievement for BMD and a boost to business in the Southern Region.

The project will create around 1,100 jobs and support more than 15,900 jobs across the state.
