BMD Group celebrates NAIDOC week
The BMD Group is celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout July as part of NAIDOC week.
BMD proudly acknowledges the contribution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our workforce.
Most recently, the $88 million Tiger Brennan Drive Duplication project in Darwin completed their Indigenous Development Plan and reported 23.5% of overall project hours to date were completed by the project’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce.
As part of BMD’s ongoing commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, a national partnership with the Clontarf Foundation was launched this year. This partnership will improve education and vocational opportunities for young Aboriginal men.
The Clontarf Foundation’s academies operate nationally, in partnership with local schools to engage young Aboriginal men, many of which have reported long-term absenteeism, in a range of extracurricular activities to ensure their attendance at school, application to studies and dedication to appropriate behaviours and self-discipline.
The four year partnership is underpinned by each organisation’s shared belief in the value of long-term investment in capacity building for young Aboriginal men. The results of which will benefit the individual students as well as the local and broader community.
BMD Group Executive Director – Operations, Scott Power said, “BMD is committed to local communities and want to maximise our ability to improve opportunities for the next generation, which our partnership with the Clontarf Foundation enables.
“BMD has a long history of indigenous engagement initiatives as well as providing tailored training opportunities. These efforts have resulted in numerous industry awards for individuals including Indigenous Apprentice and Indigenous Construction Person of the Year awards,” Mr Power said.
Clontarf Foundation General Manager – Partnerships and Communication, Shane Kiely said, “We are thrilled to have the support of the BMD Group who are able to provide tangible work experience and vocational opportunities for our participants.
The partnership will see BMD employees participating in activities with our students where students will be provided the opportunity to practise their social skills, build their confidence and increase their understanding of the opportunities available to them,” Mr Kiely said.
BMD has extensive experience working in regional and remote areas and within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
“BMD’s policies, plans, initiatives and training programs reflect the Group’s commitment to equal opportunities and we are proud of our diverse workforce and their contribution,” Mr Power said.
