VICT Webb Dock project driving innovation and sustainability

BMD is engaged by Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) to carry out the infrastructure base build construction works at the Port of Melbourne’s new international container terminal and empty container park at Webb Dock.

When complete, the VICT Webb Dock project will provide Melbourne with one of the most technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable and safest container terminals in the world.

The project team encompassing VICT (client), BMD (contractor) and AECOM (designer), have applied a unique relationship-based approach to the contract underpinned by close collaboration and communication. This approach has encouraged innovation throughout the life of the project, driving transparent and open communication and improving project outcomes including time, cost, quality, safety, and the impact on the environment. This flexible and adaptive process allowed opportunities to incorporate change into our contract without triggering cost and time variations; driving positive behaviour onsite and in the management of the contract.

BMD worked in close collaboration with the client and designer to successfully install Australia’s first Bright Light Management System (BLMS) using Light Emitting Plasma (LEP) technology.

The LEP technology uses efficient and reliable lights with an extended lifetime, seamless control integration, rapid start and restrike and a high efficiency directional point source. The lights were installed at the gate control area, terminal and empty container park, allowing the client to control, program and monitor the lights ongoing through the BLMS app, accessible from any smart phone, tablet or computer.

This advanced technology has enabled the client to reduce their energy use through intelligent lighting control and zoning, optimising work areas for both safety and security. In the long-term, the system will provide a benefit to the environment reducing greenhouse gas emissions and carbon dioxide footprint.

BMD Project Director, Rod Jeffrey, said the installed system is a perfect example of how technology is completely redefining the industry.

“Controlling the light systems through this app will not only benefit the Port of Melbourne, but will deliver a global standard encouraging the industry to continuously improve and innovate their environmental sustainability initiatives,” he said.

The VICT Webb Dock project is currently ahead of program and on budget and is due for Phase 1 commissioning towards the end of 2016.
