Work starts on Wulkuraka Station access upgrade

BMD Constructions has started work on the $8.9 million Wulkuraka Station access upgrade that will see the station become independently accessible with construction of a new pedestrian overpass including lifts.

The access upgrade, which is related to the New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) project, will see the following key features delivered:

  • construction of a new pedestrian overpass with lifts and stairs
  • raising platforms to provide easier access to train doors
  • station plaza areas with kiss’n’ride zones on Grace Street and Dixon Street
  • upgrade the existing lighting and CCTV networks
  • additional waiting shelter coverage of the platforms
  • installation of new way-finding signage
  • de-commissioning of the existing pedestrian rail crossing.

BMD Constructions’ appointment follows the completion of a new independently accessible pedestrian overpass at Geebung Station in late 2014. The Geebung Station pedestrian overpass was delivered by BMD Constructions, as part of the Geebung Overpass Alliance.

BMD Constructions General Manager – Northern Region, Peter Anusas said, “We are delighted to partner with Queensland Rail in delivering this public access infrastructure at Wulkuraka. Our background of experience in similar projects like the Geebung Station has provided us with the skills necessary for working in complex urban rail environments.

“We believe that our safety first culture along with a focus on passenger requirements will be essential for project success and look forward to working with Queensland Rail on projects of a similar nature,” Mr Anusas said.

Work started on site earlier this month and the project is set for completion in early 2016.
