At BMD, we think differently, we work differently, and we act differently.

Early on in BMD’s history, core principles were adopted that have translated into long term relationships with our clients, subcontractors, suppliers and employees. To this day, these principles are embodied in our mission statement and stand as the cornerstone of our business as we continue to grow.

Our Mission

Our mission is to sustain and grow our business by aligning with customer expectations, valuing and developing our people and maintaining a culture consistent with our traditions.

Mick Power AM founded BMD on a set of values which are still apparent throughout the business today.

For the first 30 years of business, the BMD values remained unwritten, but were understood and lived by the many long serving BMD staff members who passed them on to new employees through the way they went about their work.

In late 2008, in the lead up to BMD’s 30 year anniversary, a decision was made to formalise the values so they could be easily communicated and understood by the growing BMD family.

Today, the values are as relevant as they were 40 years ago. Our employees continue to strive to work by these values and they underpin our commitment to seeing things differently.

The biggest difference between BMD and our competitors is the way in which we go about doing our jobs.

Whilst loyalty is often used to describe our approach to our suppliers and subcontractors, it is really about relationships and this extends to our clients and the key stakeholders we engage.

Any contractor can do what we do as far as building things. What differentiates us is that we endeavour to engage our clients, suppliers, subcontractors and key stakeholders in a manner that is focused on delivering positive outcomes for all parties.

BMD has come a long way from having one client in the land development industry for the first nine years of our existence. In 1988, BMD made the decision to diversify our service offering and focus on flexibility to meet the challenges of the future. Today, we continue to expand horizons, both through industry diversity and geographically. While there have been many changes over the past four decades, some things have remained the same and we are proud to continue to place a priority on leaving lasting legacies in the communities in which we operate.

As the business celebrates this significant milestone, it is clear that our future success will remain underpinned through the development of our people, by delivering world class infrastructure, and by employing locally based subcontractors and suppliers on our projects.

Our longstanding motto, our business is our people, has never been more relevant and critical to our objectives as it is today. It is the continued commitment and loyalty of our employees that will ensure our success, and the enduring security of our business and families.

Michael Power was born in Brisbane in the 1950s.

BMD - 1971 Mick and Denise

Mick and Denise were married in 1971 in Kenmore, Brisbane.

BMD - 1979 BMD Office Melville Terrace

BMD is conceived by Mick and Denise Power, along with Mick’s sister Beverley and her husband Bevin who were both partners in the business for the first 12 months.

BMD establishes our first office in Manly, Brisbane. At the end of the first year of business, BMD had made a profit of $800.

BMD - 1979 Burleigh Waters

BMD starts their first project at Burleigh Waters for Hooker Rex.

BMD wins its first long term contract to develop Centenary Estates which today consists of multiple suburbs south-west of Brisbane. BMD continued to work on subdivisions at Centenary Estates and Burleigh Waters for the next 20 years.

From 1979, BMD had one client – Hooker Corporation who went into receivership in 1988. From this point, BMD made the decision to diversify their service offering and focus on flexibility to meet the challenges of the future.

Bartons BMD Pro-Am

BMD began sponsoring the Wynnum Golf Club Pro-Am, one of the longest-running and most respected Pro-Am events on the Australian golf calendar. Today, Doug Barton and Mick Power AM are joint sponsors of the Barton Bayside/BMD Wynnum Pro-Am.

Empower Logo

BMD’s design arm, Development Consulting was established. Today, Empower Engineers & Project Managers is unique within the engineering services market, offering clients a design only service or a total design and construction solution.

BMD - Boat - Curtis Ambassador

The Curtis Ambassador is launched from Bundaberg. The Curtis Ambassador is used by BMD all year round, with the two beer outlets and regular seafood menu a crowd favourite with the boat’s lucky guests.

BMD’s land development and construction divisions were divided into BMD Properties and BMD Major Projects.

BMD - Personalised Plates

BMD purchased a record number of personalised number plates from Personalised Plates Queensland – 94! Today we have a fleet of over 1,000 company vehicles that wear the plates, demonstrating the growth of our family business.

BMD - Townsville

BMD opened their first North Queensland office in Townsville. The company’s first project was Willow Gardens, a residential subdivision for Delfin Property Group (now Lendlease).

BMD - Darwin

Operations expanded into the Northern Territory after BMD was awarded the contract to construct four stages of the Fairways Waters Development for Delfin Property Group (now Lendlease).

BMD - Victoria Caroline Springs

BMD opened their first office in Victoria to further the company’s continued focus on geographic expansion. BMD expanded into the region following an opportunity to work with long-term client, Delfin (now Lendlease) on the Caroline Springs residential estate.

BMD - Wynnum Manly Seagulls

BMD launched their formal partnership with the Wynnum Manly Seagulls. The company is proud to continue supporting the Rugby League Club to this day and is both naming rights sponsor of the club’s home ground, BMD Kougari Oval, and the team itself.

BMD - Northcliffe

BMD becomes the official naming rights sponsor of BMD Northcliffe Surf Club. This is the first partnership of its kind in Australia between a surf club and a corporate sponsor. This level of support has strengthened our well established and long term partnership which began in 1999 and continues to this day.

BMD - Urbex NSW office

New South Wales became the next destination for BMD’s geographic expansion with the award of the Gross Pollutant Trap project at Bondi Beach in November 2000.

BMD - Urbex

BMD began its property development journey through River City Developments and in 2003, our formal property development arm, Urbex was established. The property developer’s first project, Kalynda Chase released land to market in 2005. Today Urbex creates innovative residential and commercial developments in Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne.

BMD - D'Arcy Arms

Mick and Denise Power purchased the D’arcy Arms, a little known Irish motel and bar/restaurant at the southern end of Surfers Paradise. The Power family were regular visitors through the 1990s and were thrilled to purchase the establishment which has played host to many important family occasions over the years.

BMD - Mick Power in 2005

On 13 June 2005, Mick Power was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He was made a Member in the General Diversion of the Order of Australia for “service to the building and construction industry, particularly in the field of civil engineering, and to the community through roles with a range of charitable and sporting organisations.” He became Mick Power AM.

BMD’s project portfolio in the ACT began with the award of the bulk earthworks contract at the Alexander Maconochie Centre in Hume in 2006. In late 2008 BMD formally opened their office in Canberra. Since then, BMD has continually expanded their capabilities in the construction and urban development sectors.

BMD - South Australia

BMD initially expanded into the South Australian market through a joint venture with company e*3, creating BMD e*3. This allowed the company to provide an enhanced portfolio of building construction and industrial services to completement their existing civil and urban development offering.

In 2010, BMD e*3 was rebranded to BMD Industrial and today delivers structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, fuel systems, water and wastewater solutions for a diverse range of clients and industries nationally.

BMD - 20 year club

BMD’s 20 Year Club was established to recognise the long-term commitment of BMD employees and to acknowledge their role in the company’s growth and performance. Each year, new members are inducted and celebrate their 20 year milestone with Mick Power AM and other long serving employees. As of 2019, the 20 Year Club has more than 80 members.

Hayley Johnson (nee Power) and Dare Power initiate PowerArts, an arts production and investment organisation which produces and invests intelligently with the goal of lifting the profile of the arts in Australia while cultivating new Australian talent.

BMD - GHW launch

BMD officially launches their Good Health & Wellbeing program. The program is designed to encourage BMD employees to take a more active role in achieving overall good health and wellness and encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing.

BMD was named the seventh Best Place to Work in Australia following a survey conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute Australia, published by BRW.

BMD - Mick Power wins the distinguished contractor award

Mick Power AM was awarded the Distinguished Contractor Award from QUT recognising his lifetime of achievements and commitment to the industry.

BMD - Scott Power Appointed Executive Director Operations

Scott Power, Group Executive Director – Operations, was appointed to the BMD Group Board in April 2009. The appointment of a new Director with a specific focus on operations was an outcome of planning for the next generation of growth and progression at BMD.

BMD - City Cycle

BMD’s landscape construction arm, JMac Constructions became a 100% BMD owned company. JMac Constructions’ first project, as part of the BMD Group, was constructing infrastructure for the iconic Brisbane City Cycle initiative.

BMD - Legacy Way

Transcity, an integrated team comprising of BMD Constructions, Ghella and Acciona were announced as the winning proponents for Brisbane City Council’s $1.5 billion Legacy Way tunnel.

BMD - Urban Development

BMD Urban was established as a specialist civil and building contractor to the urban development industry. In the 2017-2018 financial year, BMD Urban constructed 45 projects across seven regions, contributing to the business’s turnover of $477 million.

BMD - First Dare Awards

BMD held their first Dare Awards event. BMD’s internal, peer nominated recognition program is held annually to showcase BMD’s unique culture and the loyalty and dedication of our people who strive for ongoing success.

BMD - Darwin Buffaloes

Urbex became a proud major partner of the Darwin Buffaloes Football Club. The Buffaloes compete in the Northern Territory Australian Football League, and offer opportunities for girls, boys, women and men to be involved in community events through AFL.

BMD - Perth and Clontarf

BMD celebrated their expansion into Western Australia with an official office launch event in 2015. The event also marked the beginning of a four year partnership with the Clontarf Foundation which works to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men.

BMD - Tasmania

BMD was awarded their first project in Tasmania, cementing the business as a truly national company. BMD delivered 11 sewage treatment plants for client, TasWater, engaging 85% of suppliers from the local market.

BMD - International

BMD expanded internationally with the commencement of a partnership between BMD International and Prime Metroline Infrastructure Holdings to form Prime BMD in 2017. Prime BMD specialises in the delivery of port and marine, road and highway, integrated resort and casino, renewable energy and community infrastructure projects, as well as expert project management services.

BMD formalised their commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement through the launch of the organisation’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). In July 2019, BMD launched their second RAP, Innovate, which builds on what has already been achieved within the organisation’s sphere of influence.

BMD - 40 year milestone

July 2019 marks 40 years of operations for BMD. In 1979, Mick Power AM seized a business opportunity when a construction contractor pulled out of the lower end of the market and declined to tender on contracts with values under $200,000.

Two generations of the Power family are currently well entrenched in the BMD business.

There are currently nine Power grandchildren, meaning there is a strong possibility that the third generation will be future employees of the business and continue the family tradition.

Evolution of the BMD logo

1979 - 1994

Mick and Denise Power’s first born son, Dare had shown a significant artistic talent as an eight-year-old when he designed the very first stylised BMD logo in 1979.

He handed his sketch over to the graphic designer to formalise it, but there was no doubting the shape he’d given to the BMD which adorned the company letterhead for the first 15 years of operation.

1994 - 2003

Between the late 1980’s and mid 1990’s, BMD’s offering expanded to include engineering design, property management and major infrastructure services.

BMD’s inaugural logo was updated to encompass each of these capabilities under one banner – The BMD Group.

2003 - Current

A group of people representing all divisions of the company designed the current BMD logo from an analysis of the culture, values and aspirations of BMD and by identifying the things that make BMD different.

The logo shows the wide horizon of opportunity before us and represents the long term relationships that exist inside and outside the business. The colour references the traditional BMD blue and also incorporates green which is representative of the earth.
