Bendigo Airport Upgrade project recognised for innovation and excellence in construction

BMD’s Bendigo Airport Upgrade – Stage 2 project was awarded a Civil Contractors Federation Victoria Category 4 (project value $10 million to $30 million) Earth Award over the weekend.

The award, submitted in conjunction with client City of Greater Bendigo, recognised the project team’s innovative construction method which allowed the construction of an additional taxiway, further increasing the airport’s capacity and minimising disruption to large aircraft.

The significant regional upgrade project involved constructing and commissioning a new 17/35 runway, taxiway and lighting, as well as upgrading an existing taxiway and apron code for Code 3C aircraft. Despite constructing through one of Bendigo’s wettest winters in recent history, the project was completed on time and on budget, a testament to the project team’s successful pre-planning.

“City of Greater Bendigo has been impressed with the highly effective and collaborative BMD team from the beginning of the Bendigo Airport Upgrade – Stage 2 project. It is clear that BMD are focused on developing solid working relationships with their clients, with project outcomes remaining at the forefront of the BMD team’s minds.

BMD started this project with the aim of delivering a quality product for the region and we have been very happy with their work. They have understood and embraced the challenges that come with working in an airside environment and have delivered on their commitment of not significantly impacting airport operations.” – Rachel Lee, (former) Manager – Major Projects, City of Greater Bendigo

The award of the prestigious industry award recognises BMD’s experience working in live, operating environments with the project delivered without affecting the airport’s existing runway.

The project will now progress as a category finalist in the CCF National Earth Awards which will be held in November this year.
