BMD Building a Healthy Workforce for Men’s Health Week

BMD partnered with Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) to help raise awareness of the importance of men’s health on construction worksites as part of International Men’s Health Week, which runs from 9-15 June 2014.

BMD employees enjoyed a fresh organic smoothie from the company The Smoothie Cycle, who ran a cycle challenge to mix their smoothies for morning tea on Friday 6 June 2014.

Health is a serious issue facing the state’s construction industry, with research showing its workers are more likely to become obese, develop elevated cholesterol and suffer from high blood pressure than Queensland’s wider adult population.

CSQ CEO Brett Schimming said it was vital the state has a construction industry that is not only skilled, but also healthy and happy.

“Taking steps to improve the mental and physical health of the workforce has the potential to deliver significant productivity benefits to the industry. Healthy workers are better able to cope with the demands of physically intensive tasks and are generally at less risk of being involved in workplace accidents,” he said.

Since 2008, BMD have promoted their Good Health and Wellbeing program to all employees. The program is designed to encourage BMD employees to take a more active role in achieving their overall good health and wellness. The program incorporates a range of group training activities, health seminars, sports and charity events, the program has received excellent participation from Senior Managers to site and office employees across Queensland and Australia.

“BMD go beyond the role of an employer with the Good Health and Wellbeing events and social nights that promote a better understanding and acknowledgement of others”, quoted a BMD employee.

To further maximise the benefits offered to our employees, Tate Smith, Olympic Kayak Gold Medallist, was appointed as our Good Health and Wellbeing Ambassador. Through Tate’s role, employees are able to contact Tate for any of their training or fitness needs and learn from his expertise in this area. Renowned nutritionist and author Cyndi O’Meara, has also been engaged as BMD’s official nutrition advisor, providing health updates and advice. Both our Ambassadors provide regular and relevant advice to our employees through a number of channels including our internal website, employee magazine and electronic communication materials.

Most recently, BMD were awarded Silver recognition for the 2014 Queensland Workplace for Wellness on behalf of the Queensland Government. BMD were delighted to receive this award in recognition of our health and wellbeing program and the commitment to investing in and ensuring the health of our employees.

BMD are proud to support Men’s Health Week with CSQ and The Smoothie Cycle Challenge.
