BMD Constructions continue local presence in North Queensland

BMD is a proud local in North Queensland, having delivered a vast range of infrastructure projects in the region over the past two decades. Recent awarded contracts include the Lakeland Solar and Storage Project for Conergy, the Cairns Southern Access Corridor Stage 2 – Robert Road to Foster Road project for Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), and works are progressing well on both the Arnot Creek (Bruce Highway) bridge replacement for DTMR and the Townsville CBD Utilities Upgrade for Townsville City Council.

Global downstream solar company Conergy has appointed BMD Constructions, headquartered in Queensland, as the major subcontractor for its $42.5 million Lakeland Solar and Storage Project in Far North Queensland. The project is the southern hemisphere’s first integrated solar, storage and fringe-of-grid project of this scale, and will demonstrate grid-to-islanding functionality which will see BMD Industrial undertake civil, mechanical and structural works on the 60-hectare site.

BMD Industrial will draw on our extensive experience working in the North Queensland region during the construction phase of the project with works set to commence in October. BMD will directly employ approximately 20 workers during the construction phase of the Lakeland Solar & Storage project, some of whom will be local. We are also committed to helping upskill the local workforce to provide an overall residual benefit and growth to the region.

Heading south, BMD Constructions has recently commenced works on the $58 million Cairns Southern Access Corridor Stage 2 – Robert Road to Foster Road project for DTMR. The project involves widening 2.3 kilometres of the Bruce Highway between Robert Road and Foster Road from four lanes to six lanes. These widening works are the next stage of the southern approach to Cairns upgrade and will see the upgrade of the Robert Road and Bruce Highway signalised intersection and a new service road connection on the eastern side of the highway.

In Arnot Creek, 12 kilometres north of Ingham on the Bruce Highway, BMD Constructions are continuing to deliver works to replace the Arnot Creek Bridge as part of the Accelerated Works Program. The fast-tracked project involves the construction of a new wider bridge and approaches to deliver vital improvements in road safety, freight connectivity and productivity when completed in February 2017. BMD’s continued success in the delivery of infrastructure in regional and remote areas is due to our experience and commitment to locals, with this project supporting 31 local jobs during construction.

In Townsville, works are progressing well on the Townsville CBD Utilities Upgrade for Townsville City Council. Over the next four years, as construction manager, BMD will upgrade water and wastewater assets and install approximately 15 kilometres of water and sewerage pipework, replacing mains up to 60 years old. With all onsite works to be completed under packaged based contracts with various subcontractors and suppliers, BMD Constructions along with Townsville City Council are heavily encouraging local subcontractor and supplier participation to help deliver the project. With the engagement of local subcontractors, BMD will work in collaboration to successfully deliver this large scale project, while at the same time working to upskill the local workforce providing an overall residual benefit and growth to the region. This way of business not only results in excellent relationships with the local community, but provides an enhanced skills legacy post project completion.
