BMD Constructions deliver the Roads and Services contract at Port of Melbourne

BMD Constructions has successfully completed works associated with the Port of Melbourne $1.6 billion Port Capacity Project.

BMD’s works delivered important ‘backbone’ infrastructure including the widening of Cook Street, Todd Road and the Westgate on/off ramp, and construction of two new Webb Dock internal roads – Kooringa Way and Webb Dock Drive; conversion of two roundabouts into signalised intersections; the implementation of buffer zones; a moveable gate to facilitate OD movements and new shared use paths and commuter cycle paths along Todd Road.

The project involved the relocation and protection of numerous utility services to accommodate the construction of new infrastructure associated with the Webb Dock development. BMD managed and supported the relocation of major utility services including CitiPower high voltage (HV) and low voltage assets, relocation of major Telstra, Optus, NBN, Megaport and Pipe Network communication assets, relocation of South East (SE) Water mains, and VicRoads assets. New services were installed throughout the Webb Dock precinct, including: 3.2 kilometres of CitiPower HV ring main; 300 millimetre diameter private Port watermain; CCTV assets; five sewer pump stations to SE Water requirements.

This infrastructure will enable the Port’s new terminal operators to fast track the development of their facilities which includes a new international container terminal, an expanded auto terminal and a dedicated ‘on-port’ pre-delivery inspection hub.

The project invested heavily in the provision of buffer zones, delivered by BMD’s wholly owned subsidiary and landscape construction company, JMac Constructions to protect and enhance the amenity of nearby residents and local communities. The buffer zones included 7 and 5 metre high noise walls; extensive landscaping; boardwalk, pedestrian lighting, drinking fountains, street furniture, fitness equipment, signage; and construction of a complex steel structure, dubbed the observation tower.

The Port of Melbourne is a vital link in a complex supply chain that creates jobs and drives Victoria’s economic growth. BMD Constructions are proud to have been involved in the redevelopment of Webb Dock, which will assist in returning it to its original role as an international container handling facility that is capable of handling at least one million containers annually.

The project was recently awarded the Project Infrastructure category at the recent Engineers Australia’s 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Awards. The Engineering Excellence Awards recognise and reward the outstanding achievements in the practice of engineering and service to the profession.
