BMD Downs Tools for Charity

BMD will be downing tools in a stop work meeting of a different kind this week, but the only industrial bargaining around the table will be the sponsorship of a number of contractors, engineers and port operators who will shave and colour their heads, and lose their beards, to raise funds to continue the work of children’s charity, Bravehearts.

Bravehearts has joined with BMD and Port of Melbourne Corporation on the Webb Dock redevelopment site to raise funds to help stop child abuse and sexual assault.

Design Engineer on the site, Wayne Perrett will even sacrifice his 30 year old moustache for the cause.

“We all have kids and grandkids of our own and this way the workers on this project can team up to make a real contribution,” said Mr Perrett.

One in five Australian children is sexually assaulted before the age of 18, and Bravehearts’ vision is to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child by 2020.

Bravehearts’ key purpose is to educate, empower and protect Australian children from sexual assault, and helps to raise funds to run their school based prevention programs as well as training, counselling, support and advocacy for survivors.

“We are most grateful for the support of the workers on the Webb Dock site, because fundraising events like this help raise awareness and make a real difference as we look towards making Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child by 2020,” Tammy from Bravehearts said.

Paul Dall’Oglio who manages the civil works for BMD Constructions, will be one of the crew to lose their locks.

“This is one job that I’m looking forward to. We’re aiming to prove that we’re just as good at digging deep and emptying pockets for this worthy cause as we are at digging up and excavating the site!” said Mr Dall’Oglio.

All of the participants are currently working on the Port Melbourne site building Melbourne’s third international container terminal and expanded automotive hub.

The call for workers to stop work and down tools on the site will go out at 10am on Friday 3 October.
