BMD founds innovative learning tool, Constructionarium Australia

Last month, BMD Constructions was proud to be involved in Constructionarium Australia Limited’s pilot program which provided “hands-on” construction experience for young professionals.

Based on the United Kingdom’s Constructionarium which was established over 10 years ago, Constructionarium Australia will become an ongoing program. The program will provide an opportunity for construction, resources and engineering firms’ engineers and trainees, as well as university students to participate.

Through the Constructionarium Australia program, engineering students and graduates can apply the knowledge they have gained at university in a safe, practical and relevant environment.

Founded by BMD and Aurecon, Constructionarium Australia involves participants working in teams to construct scaled down versions of iconic bridges, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. Through the innovative and practical program, participants gain hands-on experience of civil engineering construction as well as developing teamwork and management skills.

Nineteen students from BMD Constructions, Aurecon and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads participated in the pilot project at the University of Southern Queensland, which involved building a scaled-down replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

Peter Anusas, BMD Constructions General Manager Northern Region said BMD were excited to be a founding partner of a program which will help expose student engineers to the practical  realities of a construction project.

“There is a desperate need in our industry to provide an environment where young professionals can safely transition from their academic exposure to the real world of civil engineering practice. This involves hands-on working with materials, machinery and each other.

“At the end of the pilot, the students from the three companies who worked together for the first time have been able to understand with confidence the essential ingredients to projects’ success and the importance of teamwork and inter-personal relationships,” Peter said.

BMD is a firm believer in the value of “hands-on” experience and are proud to be a founding partner of a program which will help expose student engineers to the practical realities of construction projects.
