BMD joins Australia’s largest cup recycling program

In 2019, BMD implemented a cup recycling program on some of our Victorian project sites, with more than 1200 cups recycled since the initiative kicked off in November last year.

The program was first introduced at our annual Victorian health, safety, environment and quality training day where employees were encouraged to recycle their coffee cups before arranging collection by Simply Cups, an organisation that helps businesses separate their disposable cups from other waste streams.

Traditionally, most disposable cups are unable to be recycled due to the product’s plastic lining. Simply Cups recycles the paper component of the cups which is then turned into new paper products. The plastic lining is sent to plastic recycling plants where it is used to develop new plastic products such as the world’s first reusable cup made from recycled coffee cups.

During March, BMD is celebrating Environment Month, a national initiative which sees our people and projects focus on environmental and sustainability initiatives.

This year, employees are encouraged to submit their ideas to reduce environmental impact, with one lucky participant winning a family environmental experience including accommodation, car hire and entry to a local zoo or wildlife park.
