BMD Scores Trifecta at Engineers Australia Excellence Awards

BMD Group has been awarded three Engineer’s Australia Excellence Awards at a ceremony held on Saturday 13 September 2014 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade project won Category 7 – Project Infrastructure over $50 million and the New Parallel Runway: Phase 1 Civil Works (NPR) with Brisbane Airport Corporation won Category 3 – Environment.

The CairnsConnect Joint Venture comprising of BMD Constructions and Albem Operations were engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to design and Construct the $111 million Bruce Highway Upgrade into Cairns.

The NPR project included site preparation works, modifications to runway pavements, service relocations, major drainage works and access roads. A key focus for the project team was the environmental work to enhance and maintain the nearby 285 hectare biodiversity zone.

The judges were impressed with the high quality of engineering principles delivered by the BMD project teams. Both projects were awarded wins for their exceptional construction delivery and methodologies, ingenuity, impressive safety records and contribution to the local and surrounding community and environment.

Engineers Australia also recognised Michael Vollbon as Young Engineering Professional of the Year. Michael is currently working for BMD on the Legacy Way project as East Works Manager for the Transcity Joint Venture.

The judges were impressed with Michael’s exceptional professionalism, contribution to the engineering industry and his commitment to the development of other young engineers.
