BMD’s National Safe Work Month initiatives

Throughout October, the BMD Group ran a number of initiatives promoting National Safe Work Month.

The BMD Group established a goal of Zero Harm in early 2012, promoting continual improvement of health, safety, environment and quality management.

Reflecting Safe Work Australia’s theme of ‘Be Safe, Be Healthy, Because…’ the BMD Group rolled out the following initiatives nationally:

  • ‘Take 10@10’ was held on Friday 23 October, encouraging teams to discuss a relevant safety topic or perform a safety activity
  • BMD TV episode five was released to BMD staff in October
  • all sites were to arrange a speaker for toolbox relevant to mental health, alternatively sites could choose to show a supplied video (click here for a Beyond Blue video example)
  • photo competition for BMD personnel reflecting the 2015 theme
  • drawing competition for BMD family and friends reflecting the 2015 theme.

NSW Safety Day

In New South Wales, Safe Work Month culminated in a joint BMD Constructions and BMD Urban Safety Training Day held on Saturday 31 October.

The day was a timely reminder about what can be achieved as BMD Constructions’ (NSW) celebrated 750,000 hours and 15 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free milestones.

The NSW BMD team has engaged 70 new direct employees in the delivery and management of our sites over the past 18 months and it has been a key focus to continue BMD’s strong safety culture through these new team members.

Lost Time Injury free milestone achievements

BMD’s business units have achieved record LTI free milestones across the country. These achievements demonstrate the success of the numerous safety initiatives that BMD has developed.

Nationally, BMD Urban celebrated 10 months / 2 million hours LTI free in November. This is a massive achievement given the volume of projects that BMD Urban delivers on behalf of our value clients including local councils and land developers.

On Friday 30 October, BMD Urban’s Capestone project in Mango Hill, north of Brisbane, celebrated a major project milestone, achieving 250,000 hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free.

The project’s preliminary planning and design began in 2003 with construction starting in late 2008. The project team are now focusing on the next 12 stages of the Capestone project before its completion in 2019.

As at the end of October, BMD Constructions Northern Region achieved 14 months / 2 million man hours LTI free. Key projects underway in this region include Tiger Brennan Drive, Commonwealth Games Athletes Village and Bohle River Bridge.

BMD Urban Mates In Construction accreditation

BMD Urban has been working closely with Mates In Construction to roll out General Awareness Training to SEQ sites including the former Gold Coast Parklands and Capestone projects.

At the October Capestone Lost Time Injury free milestone celebration, Paul Bryan from Mates in Construction was on site to accredit Capestone as a Mates in Construction site. Paul commended the project team on the high number of workers who had completed the Mates in Construction general awareness and connector training.

BMD Urban’s site at the Brisbane Airport and Ripley Valley also received accreditation this month, continuing BMD’s efforts to increase awareness about mental health within the construction industry.
