London Street Bridge awarded for road safety engineering

BMD, Tonkin Consulting and City of Port Lincoln proudly took out the IPWEA South Australia Excellence in Road Safety Engineering Award for the London Street Bridge upgrade in Port Lincoln.

A much-needed bridge connection between local businesses had reached the end of its design life. The new London Street Bridge has delivered an unlimited weight capacity for heavy vehicles, continuous flow of traffic for adjoining communities and has improved safety through separation of pedestrians and cyclists from motorists.

This Road Safety Engineering Award recognises the high-quality asset delivered for the Port Lincoln community, transforming community access and performing an important social function between the city centre and Kirton Point.

As a relationship based contractor, BMD focused on local engagement within the regional city of South Australia. City of Port Lincoln’s Manager of Civil Operations Craig Matena acknowledged BMD for employing local suppliers, contractors and key stakeholders in a unique way.

“The support for the local community was evident in BMD’s engagement of local contractors and through purchasing goods locally to the benefit of the wider community.”

Completed in a challenging live rail corridor, the upgrade was delivered with safety of the project team and community a priority, successfully completed lost time injury free. The project adds to BMD’s bridge construction capability and strengthens our capacity in delivering innovative public works for local communities.

The project was funded by the Australian Government’s Bridge Renewal Program.
