Hear From Our People
In 2021, I began working at BMD as a Graduate Engineer on the Newell Highway Program Alliance, a $236.8 million project in conjunction with AECOM for Transport for NSW. The project started as a D&C of initially 30 overtaking lanes, which has now grown into 38 overtaking lanes across almost 850 kilometres. I have since been promoted to Site Engineer and have been involved in the construction and development of overtaking lanes and safety works at Firetail, Back Creek and the Gullifers project, as well as recovery works after the 2022 floods across regional NSW.
The most rewarding part about working at BMD is the belonging and family which flows through each employee, project, division, and across all business units. Through BMD’s engaging value system, I feel respected and appreciated for the contributions I make.
I began my career with BMD as a graduate engineer in 2009 and I am now a Project Manager.
I have been involved in jobs varying from $200,000 to $8 million and travelled all over Queensland, as well as to the Northern Territory, exposing me to almost all civil construction works including bridges, major highways, rail and marine projects. The different challenges these projects present have assisted in my ongoing development and I love the support I get from my colleagues as well as BMD’s outstanding approach to open communication which sees everyone willing to provide assistance and share their knowledge.
In 2015, I began working with BMD as a Graduate Engineer in Canberra.
I’m now working as a Project Engineer in South East Queensland. BMD made moving interstate a smooth transition, from assisting with the relocation to providing a great support team of colleagues at either end. By embracing opportunities and being open to travel, I have been able to experience projects in various cities around Australia involving bridges, road works, subdivisions and land developments. Each new project presents its own challenges which means that I’m constantly being challenged professionally and no one day is ever the same.
After celebrating 25 years with the company and reflecting on my career, the same thoughts come into my mind when I think about both good jobs and challenging jobs and that is the people and culture.
At BMD we have built a family culture where we all work as a team to succeed with the same common goal.
There are so many reasons why I made the decision to forge a long-term career at BMD but underlying them all is the basic core values that BMD uphold.
They resonate with me personally, particularly our ‘family’ value. After 20 years, I can truly say that BMD represents my professional family.
I was the inaugural recipient of the BMD Group scholarship at RMIT University in 2012. The award of this scholarship led to vacation work through my final years of study which provided invaluable experience in preparing me for the workforce.
After spending time in the estimating team as a graduate, I moved onsite where I worked on an award-winning airside project. Since then I have diversified my experience through working on a level crossing removal project and a major VicRoads upgrade. What I like most about BMD is the culture which encourages team work, collaboration and responsibility, producing safe and effective engineers constructing high quality projects for our clients.
I started with BMD back in 2001 and since then what has stood out for me is the sense of ‘family’ BMD embodies and the importance this value holds within our business.
Regardless of whether it is personally or professionally, BMD has always stood by me and supported me. It means a lot when you know your colleagues and wider management team are always there to support and encourage you.
Having been working for BMD for almost three years now, what stands out to me most is the sense of family.
It is great to be known by Senior Managers from across the country where you are much more than a name or number. Everyone at BMD forms part of the BMD family where you are respected and valued for the contribution you make on a daily basis. I also enjoy the variety of projects we work on and the high performing project teams which allows us to deliver successful outcomes for our clients.
I started with BMD 10 years ago and what I value most is the support network between the states.
I can call on anyone for help to get a better understanding of requirements which allows me to implement initiatives that make my sites work safely.
I love being part of something larger that makes a real difference to the communities each project is being built for.
During my time, I have been lucky enough to tender for, and work on a number of large complex road, rail and port projects. I love how every project presents a new challenge, and I get to interact with such varied groups and people. I have enjoyed bringing a marketing and public relations creative influence to each project which challenges me every day in different ways. At BMD, I love how I have the freedom to think outside the box to ensure I am always learning.
