Scope

The scope of work included:

  • marine based piling including construction of 230 metre long combi wall as well as walkways and mooring dolphins
  • installation of 30 metre anchor ties between walls within tidal zones
  • supply and transport of 300,000 tonnes of rock fill
  • bulk earthworks
  • excavation and management of potential acid sulphate soils
  • construction of heavy pavement
  • concrete construction of capping beam and slab over water
  • installation of navigation aids in the shipping channel.

Outcomes

Throughout construction, BMD was committed to delivering excellent outcomes for the project. This was done through exceptional planning and innovation including strong commitment to health, safety, environment and quality.

The local delivery team consisted of 35% of residents from the greater Gladstone area. By instilling an exceptional safety culture BMD was able to achieve 300,000 hours lost time injury free.

The project presented unique environmental conditions including low lying land within the site boundaries and soft sediments within the proposed location. As a result, dredging was required to prepare the site which resulted in changes to the construction methodology for the design of the seawall.

By proposing alternative delivery processes over and above the tender methodology, BMD was able to mitigate logistical constraints through the provision of additional berthing and transport options for the client. This when coupled with an efficient procurement system that increased rock deliveries from 350 tonnes per day to 3000 tonnes per day, and a complex piling methodology, allowed the BMD project to be the only marine project on Curtis Island which was completed ahead of schedule.

BMD’s relationship with the client was excellent throughout the duration due to BMD’s commitment to meeting all safety, security and operational requirements.
