Scope

BMD successfully completed a technically challenging jacked box tunnel without disruption to the over-lying railway and construction was undertaken safely in a live rail environment which saw a coal train passing every three minutes.

Specifically, the scope of work included:

  • 53 metre long jacked box tunnel with an 8 metre by 4.5 metre cross sectional area, all constructed under a live rail service operated by Aurizon
  • 80 metre long arch tunnel and 90 metre long in-situ cut and cover tunnel
  • rail receival building – 3250m3 concrete structure extending 12 metres below the ground and 10 metres above the ground
  • 5.6 kilometres of overland conveyor foundations
  • constructions and demolition of temporary works associated with jacked box tunnel construction
  • construction of the substructure for the twin rail bridges.

Outcomes

BMD recognised the hazard working in a live rail environment posed and implemented solutions to eliminate safety risks. One such solution was the creation of a customised canopy structure in collaboration with the client, as well as modifying the original design from a 220 diameter directional drill to a 460 millimetre full clutched micro-tunnelled structure.
