BMD Constructions awarded New Parallel Runway Phase 2 Airfield Works

BMD Constructions has been awarded the $400 million New Parallel Runway: Phase 2 Airfield Works for Brisbane Airport Corporation in a 50:50 joint venture with CPB Contractors as the Skyway Joint Venture.

The project builds on the successful project outcomes BMD achieved on the first phase of the New Parallel Runway Civil Works Package, with the project delivered on program and under budget and with significant environmental outcomes.

BMD Group Board Chairman and Managing Director Mick Power said BMD Constructions is proud to continue the organisation’s long association with Brisbane Airport Corporation after undertaking multiple projects over the past 13 years.

“It is a privilege to be working with Brisbane Airport Corporation again to deliver the best runway system in Australia, improving and building capacity for the gateway to Brisbane,” he said.

BMD Group Executive Director – Operations Scott Power said BMD is a specialist in live, operational environments with project teams experienced in airport security protocols and compliance to deliver an uncompromised commitment to safety and excellence.

“We have brought together a joint venture team of highly experienced personnel to deliver comprehensive and innovative engineering solutions to ensure a successful works program,” he said.

The Airfield Works package involves constructing the new 3.3 kilometre runway and 12 kilometre taxiway system, and airfield infrastructure including navigational aids, airfield lighting, multiple utilities, signage, operation roads, airfield drainage and landscaping, security fencing and control systems.

Construction is scheduled to start in the coming weeks, with the runway expected to be fully operational in 2020.

Brisbane Airport Corporation estimates that the new parallel runway will mean the number of landings and departures from Brisbane Airport will increase from 227,000 flights a year to 360,000 by 2035 with passenger numbers expected to double to nearly 50 million in the same time.
