Kangaroo Island Airport Upgrade lands Airport of the Year honours

This week at the Australian airport industry’s national awards night, BMD landed the Regional Airport of the Year Award for the second consecutive year.

This year the Regional Corporate Project of the Year Award was presented to BMD for our work at Kangaroo Island Airport, with the awards celebrating investment in the aviation sector, recognising innovation and excellence.

BMD’s South Australian Construction Manager, Tim Bishop said the efficient and safe construction of the upgraded runway and associated taxiway is testament to BMD’s ability to manage complex construction works in a regional airport.

“This remote project was entirely unique in the sense that works were delivered on an island with less than 5,000 people and logistical and procurement challenges extended beyond regional locality.

“As a relationship-based contractor, BMD is extremely proud to have contributed to the community during our time on the island, with 77% of the contract spent locally, optimising innovations through local knowledge,” he said.

Kangaroo Island Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Boardman says Kangaroo Island Airport took out two of the 2018 National Awards.

“Kangaroo Island Council is extremely proud of the high-quality airport upgrade we have delivered this year, with it being the largest possible upgrade of our facilities.

“To be presented with two awards on the night is testament to the work delivered and the airport’s capacity to facilitate larger aircraft and more direct routes, which positively impact’s on the Island’s community and tourism,” he said.

BMD’s unique capability in delivering necessary airport upgrades of all sizes was recognised on the night. The work BMD delivered at Townsville Airport’s Apron Redevelopment was a finalist in Major Airport Corporate Project of the Year, and Brisbane International Airport’s Apron Expansion a finalist in Capital City Airport Corporate Project of the Year.
