BMD Successfully Delivers Key Infrastructure Projects

The new financial year commenced with significant delivery milestones reflecting our ability to seamlessly deliver large and complex infrastructure.

The Hay Point project is drawing to a close and is expected to officially complete in September 2013, bringing nearly three years of construction to a close. Over the project duration, BMD was awarded a significant increase in scope, proudly employed a predominately local workforce and achieved over 600,000 hours LTI free.

The completion of additional key projects in the resources and energy sector included the APLNG Material Offloading Facility on Curtis Island, and the Caval Ridge and Grosvenor projects in the Bowen Basin which is a true reflection of our strong performance in the sector.

As part of ‘Operation Queensland’, the Leichhardt and Dawson Highway Fitzroy Region Repair Works successfully completed in June and achieved over 308,000 hours LTI free. The $67 million project rehabilitated over 65 kilometres of flood affected roads and based on exceptional performance BMD Constructions was recently awarded a significant increase in scope.

BMD Constructions continued to enhance our strong relationship with Brisbane Airport Corporation with the completion of the civil works package for the New Parallel Runway project. This critical piece of infrastructure was completed on time and ahead of budget.

The multi-million dollar Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade opened the most northern interchange on the Bruce Highway four months ahead of schedule on 31 August 2013. This is a significant milestone for the $150 million project which has over 85% of the construction value invested locally.

The Legacy Way project is now over 50% complete and has successfully implemented a number of key milestones this year including major traffic switches for the Western Freeway at Toowong and Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove enabling the construction of the tunnels entry and exit lanes.

More recently, the Wiggins Island GC07 project celebrated the tunnel breakthrough on 23 August 2013 marking a momentous milestone for the project. The breakthrough marks the culmination of more than 18 months of planning, temporary works and jacking, and the team have excavated a total of 2,000 cubic metres of spoil from the tunnel in a live rail environment.

Another key highlight for Queensland was the establishment of a presence in Chinchilla, representing our strong commitment to the region, with local BMD staff now on hand to meet client’s needs and services projects within the Coal Seam Gas sector.

Further south, the Adelaide office has conveniently relocated to Wayville, strengthening our local presence and increasing accessibility. Another key highlight for the South Australian region was the official opening of the $3.5 million Port Pirie Waste Transfer Station providing an improved service to the community.

The quarter also saw a variety of industry awards for our projects in Victoria and New South Wales. The M80 Ring Road Upgrade was awarded the winner of the CCF Earth Award in Victoria in the ‘$20 million to $75 million’ category and the Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge was acknowledged as a ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘$1 million to $5 million’ category. While the Epping Pedestrian Bridge project received a Highly Commended award at the 2013 Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) inaugural Quality Awards in the ‘$50 million and less contract value’ category.

The Australian Capital Territory secured two key projects including works at ‘Coombs Estate’ and the ‘Canberra Avenue Bus Priority Measures’ and looks forward to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

JMac Constructions, BMD’s landscaping division, continue to deliver key urban development projects in the Northern Territory with works at Zuccoli, Johnston Ridge and Muirhead.

BMD Consulting continue to deliver the masterplanning of Zuccoli, supporting our unique integrated service offering, by providing design, construction services, development management and landscaping works.

Urbex, BMD’s property division, recently saw the long-awaited announcement for the Moreton Bay Rail Link service in Mango Hill. This piece of infrastructure will service Urbex’s flagship community, Capestone, and add significant value to the project and residents.

BMD has a diverse range of jobs forecasted for the year and our priorities will be to strengthen existing client relationships and to make sure that BMD really does do things differently.
