Direct hop to Kangaroo Island for Australia’s east coast with the successful opening of new and improved runway

BMD Constructions together with Kangaroo Island Council, Tonkin Consulting and RCP have successfully opened the new and improved runway (01/19) at Kangaroo Island (Kingscote) Airport. The vital upgrade has lengthened and strengthened the existing runway which will now enable direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney for weekend getaways.

On Sunday the airport achieved a major milestone with Kangaroo Island’s first QantasLink Q400 service from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island landing on the upgraded runway with 47 passengers on board.

With an exceptional history of delivering in live operational environments, BMD Constructions maintained no interruption to existing services between Adelaide and the island, with all works delivered airside. Works included earthworks, drainage, as well as lengthening, strengthening and sealing of the main runway and associated taxiway, apron and lighting requirements.

As a proud local in South Australia for the past 10 years, BMD provided local employment opportunities on the island and engaged the community through various contracts for subcontractors and suppliers on the project.

The project was delivered on time with a race to the finish as a result of a high performing team dedicated to delivering to client expectations. BMD Constructions ensured the upgrade works were completed with safety the highest priority. As a result of an uncompromised commitment to safety at all levels the project recorded over 22,000 hours lost time injury free and achieved 100% compliance with BMD positive performance indicators.
