Scope
The scope of work included:
- replacement of approximately 10,000m2 of an existing bitumen apron with a 100 millimetre lean mix blinding layer and 275 millimetre concrete apron
- removal and replacement of unsuitable subgrade across the entire apron area
- drainage system replacement
- watermain realignment
- removal of asbestos conduits and a disused fuel tank.
Outcomes
Throughout construction on the apron upgrade the project team managed several unforeseen challenges including an entire month’s rainfall in one day.
To overcome the tight construction timeframe, the team developed an accelerated program and worked collaboratively with Department of Defence representatives and concrete suppliers to deliver placement of 2,500m3 of concrete in only 20 days. This, when combined with after hours work, and the implementation of a weather monitoring system to calculate the concrete’s rate of evaporation, minimised the risk of plastic shrinkage and allowed the project to be delivered on time.
As part of the commitment to an ongoing working relationship with the Department of Defence, six BMD staff members undertook the Rehbein Airport Consultants’ safety course and achieved accredited Airport Safety Officer status.
